Turning Back The Clock

Turning Back The Clock
Just like Dorathy said in the wizard of Oz, “there’s no place like home”. That sums up just how I feel right now after jumping back into the KMS #2. Plus being 25,000 miles away from Hannagan feels pretty good too. We have had a strong start to the year with three wins from four starts but it has still been hard to except our dismal 14th place result at Parramatta for the 3rd round of the series. Without sounding like a bag full of excuses we at least found three problems that didn’t help us, with the main being a mag going south and losing power which never gave our Pete Morris motor a chance.
Along with finding a couple of problems I also went for a drive and had a sit down chat with god for about 4 hours. Yep, it’s amazing the power of prayer, when you sit down and beg Felschy to help. Allan Felsch is as far as I’m concerned the best crew chief in Australian history as not only is he good at building cars turning the wrenches but he is one of the very few that build the motors aswell and he should be in the Australian Hall of Fame soon as he has won everything there is to win . I have won a lot of races with Al over the years with our own car along with driving for other owners on one off races but I am only a very small part of what he has achieved in this sport and he has worked with some of the best in the sport like my dad, Garry Rush, Danny Smith, Steve Brazier, Britton, McCubbin to name a few. Most people know Al is like a second dad and has had a lot of influence on my career and he knows how to get into my head and get the best out of me and pump me up when I need it. If he told me to put three wheels on as it would be faster than four I would do it. With that being said I also take nothing away from Pete and Shane-o as we made some changes to how we normally run the car and I feel we have made the car faster and more maneuverable. .
Our last race win was at PCR and boy it was good to take a win there a week after a bad run plus it is also the first win there in 6 years so they tell me. Man doesn’t that make me feel a bit older. I will say that over the past 6 years we have only been able to race at Parramatta maybe 3 times a year and we have usually been up front just not getting the wins. It was also special as my family starting with my mum, god mother, sisters, nieces and nephews and of course Amy and Bugs were there even if the true reason for them being there was to see Santa. Let me tell you Santa was bloody fast too. The last time I saw Santa race a Sprintcar he drove for the Craft Brothers. I not sure if Santa had traction control on his sled this year or was using Reindeer pee in his full tank but something wasn’t right. Then again Santa looked a lot slimmer this year than in the past.
Even though we took the win and it was pleasing I was a bit peeved at my old mate Braz as he stepped on his wing wang and we didn’t get to battle it out for the win as he spun just as I got to his tail. And YES, I do believe that we had him beat as our car was able to run were ever I needed to and Gaz was stuck on the top. I’m sure if you ask Gaz he had me beat but what would anyone expect from either one of us as it has always been that way. It was great to hear Wade back as he will always be the #1 voice and ring master of World Series and it was awesome to hear Mike Raymond as he will always be the voice of Australian Motorsport. Mike is the Chris Economaki of Australia. It doesn’t seem that long ago that I remember being a little kid driving a replica of my dad’s Australia 1 midget around Liverpool Speedway and listening to Mike and Steve Raymond commentate or my first official and age legal race meeting which was at Liverpool Speedway. For some reason the aches and pains, the grey hair and crow’s feet tell me a totally different story. Both speedway and Australian Motorsport owe a lot to the man that made the catch fraz ‘You alllll bbbeee there”
Outside of racing I was also were very fortune to be invited play in the Fujitsu Golf Tournament as an invite from the Varity Club. The list of guests was pretty amazing from all walks of life. There was one hole that you had to either play the ball that Miss World Australia Kate Richardson hit or pay a fine to use your own shot. So our group felt we were better players than she was so we paid the fine so we could play our own shot but she actually hit closer to the pin than we did. I actually think she had taken lessons from Tiger Woods wife as when she swung the club she hit were she aimed.
Brett Ogle was pretty cool even if I lost $20 on him. Fujitsu put up $50,000 for a hole in one with the money going to the Varity Club so I paid for Brett to hit my shot. Can you believe the wanker knocked it into the bunker, hell I could have done that as I had been in the sand most of the day which goes to show it must have been the balls we were using.. I think he felt bad so he told me to have a swing and gave me some pointers. The first thing he asked was what stick I was going swing and when I told him a 9 iron he advised that the pro’s hit a 7 and he was pretty sure that I wasn’t the good. So I grabbed my 5 iron stepped to the tee, wiggled the club waggled my butt and proceeded to take my worse shot of the day straight into the trees fifteen feet away. If he only understood I hit a 9 iron longer than a five and only use a driver, 9 and a putter. What an awesome day and I hope to be invited back next year.
To top the day off they had an auction to raise money and on the way out I was introduced to Laura Andon and I’m sure I made a lasting impression on her as she gave me that look. Yep, all you guys know that look a woman gives you with that little smerky smile. We spoke a little or should I say I stood by and eve’s dropped as she proceeded to tell us that she had been wearing a golf shirt in Tiger Woods colors. So in my best Johnny Swavay voice asked “Oh, what colors were they, Black and Blue? Well, I thought it was bloody funny.
So with a week off prior to Christmas I am going to enjoy the time in the sand on beautiful Cronulla beach with Emma building sand castles for her Princess and for the relo’s in the US that is the beautiful white stuff that doesn’t make your go nads freeze up to the size of raisins and spend time with our Aussie family.
We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe New Year and if you need a last minute gift for someone we are selling our old race suits via the website with proceeds going towards the GT ALLSTARS Cancer Fund. Oh, and Santa if you’re reading this I have been a very good boy this year and I am leaving you out a beer and cookies along with some carrots for the reindeers.
